In 2019, Planet Smart City commissioned us to develop the positioning strategy for Brazil’s first social smart city, located in São Gonçalo do Amarante, in the state of Ceará. The process required us to set aside preconceived assumptions and decode how the local community understood the concept of a smart city. To achieve this, we conducted an engagement process across five neighboring cities to understand local dynamics, community expectations, and where the narrative and actions would need to be adapted. After all, a smart city is one built by people, for people.
